Tomorrow, the World/Inferno Friendship Society heads west for part two of our album release tour! We’ll be sharing bills with Portland, OR jazzy folk punk band Bridge City Sinners in British Columbia, Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. Later in February, I’ll perform an invitation-only show in Philly with my partner Evie Morrel-Samuels, then debut my new duo Marbleous, with bassist Margarethe Maierhofer-Lischka of Austria, at shows in Boston, NYC, Philly, Baltimore, and DC! Read on for more.

First, a quick recap since my last update: my partner Evie and I got our first car, then I headed off on tour with World/Inferno from Texas to Florida and up the East Coast. I had a very nice birthday show with the band in Miami, where I received a parade of kisses from the audience. This past Saturday, I headed up to Brooklyn for Super Bolus IV, a showcase for artists on the Gold Bolus Recordings label. I had a great time playing music with Paul Pinto, Pat O’Reilly, Dave Ruder, Anne Rhodes, and others.

Tomorrow, World/Inferno heads to Vancouver to begin our tour with Bridge City Sinners, who you should really check out if you don’t know them already. We’ll tour together to Vancouver, Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, Sacramento, Oakland, LA, Long Beach, Mesa, Albuquerque, Denver, and Colorado Springs. On the first four shows, we’ll also be joined on the bill by Vic Ruggiero (of The Slackers) and lauren.napier. It should be a blast, and I hope you’ll come out for a fun, high-energy show if you live along the tour route!

Shortly after that tour, my partner Evie Morrel-Samuels and I will perform together for the second time as a duo at a private event in Philadelphia on February 23. We’re continuing to develop the project we started in Boston featuring original stories about alternate worlds, music, movement, and objects. Stay tuned for future public performances!

Then, from February 25 to March 1, contrabassist Margarethe Maierhofer-Lischka will join me on a tour of the Northeastern US as Marbleous, a duo that grew out of our work together on A History of Characters during my residency in her home base of Graz, Austria. We’ll be performing free improvisation that involves placing small objects (yes, including marbles) on our amplified instruments. Please come out and support us on our first tour together!

Further ahead, thingNY will perform Dave Ruder’s You Must Read a Lot of Jung twice in one day – in both the Bronx and Queens – in March. In April, thingNY has our ADDDDDDDDD run at Spectrum as part of the MATA Festival. And World/Inferno continues charging full steam ahead, with Northeastern shows in April, another US tour in May, and a big tour this summer in Europe!

On January 17th, the World/Inferno Friendship Society will release our first new album in over five years – and the first one with me playing on it! To celebrate, we’re touring to Texas, Florida, and up the East Coast in January and to the West Coast in February. In between tours, I’ll make a quick stop in NYC to play a show with other Gold Bolus Recordings label artists. Read on for details!

First, a quick recap since last time: thingNY gave a short performance at the MATA Festival 2019 Gala (see photo above) and premiered a new program at Areté in Brooklyn that received a very positive review in I Care If You Listen. World/Inferno performed in New Jersey and Long Island, then released our new album All Borders Are Porous to Cats on New Year’s Eve in Brooklyn (online release: January 17). We also released a cat-filled lyric video for our song Freedom is a Wilderness, check it out!

Tomorrow I fly to Texas for the first in a series of tours to promote World/Inferno’s new album. On this tour, we’ll hit Fort Worth, Dallas, Austin, Houston, New Orleans, Orlando, Lake Worth, Miami, Jacksonville, Athens, Atlanta, Chapel Hill, Richmond, Baltimore, and Philly. In February, we’ll join up with Portland, OR old-time/punk band Bridge City Sinners and together tour to Vancouver, Seattle, Tacoma, Portland, Sacramento, Oakland, LA, Long Beach, Mesa, Albuquerque, Denver, and Colorado Springs. It should be a blast, and I hope you’ll come out for a fun, high-energy show if you live along the tour routes! I’m especially excited for the shows in Miami and Vancouver – I’ve never been to either city, and the Miami show will take place on my 35th birthday!

Also in February, I’m looking forward to playing my first Super Bolus in Brooklyn at Muchmore’s. Gold Bolus label head Dave Ruder started a tradition a few years ago of holding an event around the time of the Super Bowl where artists on the label could collaborate. I’ve been featured on several albums on the label, including albums by my groups thingNY and Valerie Kuehne & the Wasps Nests, and I’m looking forward to playing with Dave and others on February 1.

Further ahead, my February 25-March 1 tour with Marbleous, my duo improv music project with Austrian collaborator Margarethe Maierhofer-Lischka on bass, will take us from Boston to DC. In March, thingNY will perform Dave Ruder’s You Must Read a Lot of Jung in the Bronx. In April, thingNY has our ADDDDDDDDD run at Spectrum (as part of the MATA Festival), and this summer, look out for World/Inferno in Europe!

First, a quick recap since last newsletter: in mid-November, I played my first show in Philly since moving there; some of that solo set was captured on video here. (I also recently tracked down footage from my October solo set in Austria, which featured beautiful live visuals by Konverter; watch it here.) Next, World/Inferno traveled to California and played twice in LA and once each in Anaheim, San Diego, San Francisco, Berkeley, and Sacramento. You can watch one of our LA shows in full here. Tonight, I’ll join thingNY for a performance of Paul Pinto’s mini_007 at the annual gala of the MATA Festival, who we’re very fortunate to have as presenters of our opera ADDDDDDDDD in its 10th anniversary run in April 2020! Fellow thingNYers Gelsey Bell and Erin Rogers will also perform an excerpt from their duo piece Skylighght. We’re glad to do our part to support this great NYC new music institution!

Further ahead, a new record means lots of touring to promote it, with World/Inferno traveling from Texas to Florida and up the East Coast in January, and heading back to the West Coast in February. Solo tonight in Philly, World/Inferno California tour, Dykes & Young in Houston!

I had a great time at my two-month Land Steiermark residency in Graz, Austria, as well as on visits to Vienna, Prague, and Krakow! Now I’m back in the States, where tonight I’ll play in Philly as a local artist for the first time. Tomorrow I fly to California, where World/Inferno will play shows in LA, Orange County, San Diego, Berkeley, and Sacramento! Then I head to Houston for a Dykes and Young performance. It’s all happening within the next week and a half – read on for details.

First, a recap of what’s happened since I last wrote: in September, I premiered A History of Characters, the piece I created with Margarethe Maierhofer-Lischka, Manuel Alcaraz Clemente, and Arne Glöckner, in Vienna and Graz. Margarethe and I formed a new duo named Marbleous and made plans to tour the Northeastern US in late February. In October, I played a solo-ish show in Graz with special guests Patrick Wurzwallner and Peter Hutter, played at group free improvisation nights in Graz and Vienna, played a trio improvisation show with Andrea La Rose and Darrell Johnson in Prague, and played a solo set in Krakow. Then I came back to NYC to play with the World/Inferno Friendship Society at Hallowmas and in a live video for Paste Magazine – watch it here!

I’m very excited for tonight’s show in Philly, where I’ll play a violin and electronics solo set including material developed at my residencies in Minnesota and Austria this year. I’ll be kicking off a bill featuring NYC’s Public Speaking (who kindly invited me to play) and fellow locals Datadrift and Street Rat. Come out and support!

Tomorrow, I fly to California to perform with The World/Inferno Friendship Society! We’ll play an acoustic set in LA on Sunday in a DIY space, then club dates Monday at Chain Reaction in Anaheim, Tuesday at Moroccan Lounge in LA, Wednesday at Casbah in San Diego, Friday at Cornerstone in Berkeley (at the Alternative Tentacles Records 40th anniversary show!), and Saturday at Cafe Colonial in Sacramento. Laura Dykes moved to Houston from Austin earlier this year, and I’m excited to play a show in her new home base. After that, I head to Michigan for Thanksgiving at my partner Evie’s family home. In December, it’s back to the Northeast for performances with thingNY and World/Inferno in NYC, New Jersey, and Long Island, including a brand new thingNY program with music by Jessie Marino, Robert Ashley, Jennifer Walshe, Sam Scranton, and our own Paul Pinto, and World/Inferno’s album release show on New Year’s Eve in Brooklyn!

At the end of July, thingNY played Andrew Livingston’s News from the Oort Cloud in Brooklyn and Philly, and from August 1-13, World/Inferno toured from the Northeast to Minnesota and back. My partner Evie and I moved from Boston to a lovely West Philly apartment, and a week later I headed off for two months in Austria.

Now, my three Graz-based collaborators and I are putting the finishing touches on A History of Characters, our 45-minute music theater project in English and German about language mixing and mix-ups, human and machine languages, character(s), and intercultural communication. In the piece, we ask questions like, what language does a computer speak if it is non-binary? Is English the most beautiful, efficient, and developed language in the world? On Thursday, I hit the road for nearly two weeks with The World/Inferno Friendship Society, with shows from the Northeast to Minneapolis in NJ, MD, PA, DC, MI, IN, IL, MN, WI, and OH! Then I head off to my residency in Austria, with performances in Vienna and Graz, and I’m moving to Philly! Read on…

First, a rundown since my last email: in early June, Laura Dykes and I had a great ten-show tour to Pennsylvania, Ohio, DC, Maryland, New York, and Massachusetts. My partner Evie Morrel-Samuels and I had our first duo performance in Boston’s Franklin Park, World/Inferno’s mini-tour included an outdoor set that was filmed at Punk Island, and Peter Wise & I played four shows as Wise & Young, including the launch of the new venue Peter helps run in the Berkshires, The Foundry. In July, World/Inferno played Brooklyn, I had an excellent week recording Rick Burkhardt’s Passover with thingNY in Westchester – stay tuned for the album! – and I played with violist Eve Boltax at the Cloud Club in Boston, where we premiered her Music for Catalogue, a piece I’ve been helping her develop over the past year.

Now: back in December, thingNY premiered our version of Andrew Livingston’s solo album News From the Oort Cloud, his psychedelic, spacey, chamber folk exploration of isolation and mortality. We can’t wait to bring it to audiences in Vienna and Graz! And after we finish those performances, I’ll still have over a month to work on my own…and maybe collaborate with other local performers? June tours with Dykes & Young, World/Inferno, Wise & Young to MA/RI/NY/NJ/PA/MD/DC/OH

June will be an extraordinarily busy month. From tomorrow until June 15, my acoustic duo Dykes & Young, with bassist Laura Dykes, will make its inaugural tour of the Northeast, with stops in Glenmoore PA, Pittsburgh, at the Re:Sound Festival in Cleveland, DC, Baltimore, Philly, Brooklyn, Catskill NY, and Boston. On June 19, I’ll perform my first show with my partner Evie Morrel-Samuels at a secret location in a Boston park! From June 21-23, The World/Inferno Friendship Society will play Jersey City, Boston, and one other secret location. Finally, June 27-30 marks the inaugural tour of my electroacoustic duo Wise & Young, with percussionist Pete Wise, with shows in West Stockbridge MA, Boston, Providence, and Brooklyn. Details below!

First, a quick rundown of the past month: thingNY premiered Dave Ruder’s You Must Read a Lot of Jung in an exciting weekend of shows in Hamden CT, Queens NY, and Philly. You can watch a clip from the Queens show here; we also released videos of two songs from our December performance in Brooklyn of Andrew Livingston’s News from the Oort Cloud here and here. World/Inferno had three fun and strange shows out west – one that spilled from a tiny practice studio into a parking lot in Huntington Beach CA (check out this video on Instagram), one on a big stage at Punk Rock Bowling Festival in Vegas, and one in a Vegas hotel room. Finally, this past Wednesday I had the pleasure of organizing and performing in the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ALUMNI Reunion and Showcase at Spectrum in Brooklyn.

Now, Laura Dykes and I are rehearsing in Boston for our inaugural Northeastern tour, which starts tomorrow! I’m looking forward to making more whale sounds with Laura, to being back at Camphill Soltane where Paul Pinto and I had a residency in January, to a Pittsburgh show presented by the always excellent Alia Musica, to performing alongside musicians from all over the country at the Re:Sound Festival in Cleveland, to being back at cozy Rhizome in DC, to another Baltimore show organized by the intrepid Bonnie Lander, to a very intimate Philly show organized by Asimina Chremos, to a true NYC homecoming playing on Mara Mayer’s inspiring Home Audio series in my own most recent NYC apartment, to my first time performing at former Slow Six bandmate Liam Singer’s HiLo venue in Catskill NY, and to returning to the most magical treehouse venue in Boston’s South End after many years. After the tour, I have a few days to catch my breath before performing for the first time as a duo with my partner Evie Morrel-Samuels! Evie and I met three years ago when I was playing music in a show where she was puppeteering, so it’s not our first time performing together, but it’s our first time creating work as a duo! Our act will involve music, movement, and storytelling, and we’ll perform at a secret location in a Boston park – let me know if you want the details. Then just two days later, I head out with World/Inferno to play at Monty Hall in Jersey City on June 21, a show in a still secret city on June 22, and Sonia in Cambridge, MA on the 23rd. The month ends with one more tour, this time with my electroacoustic violin and percussion duo Wise & Young. Pete Wise and I had a great debut show at the Harvard Ed Portal in Boston in March, and this is the first time we’re hitting the road together. Pete is one of the organizers of the Berkshire Fringe Festival, and our first performance is at The Foundry, their new venue in West Stockbridge, MA. Then we’ll play a show at a soon-to-be-announced venue in Boston, a show at Tea in Sahara in Providence, and on the OmniCortex series in Brooklyn. Please come support our new project!

Down the line, thingNY will be recording Rick Burkhardt’s Passover in July, and plans are in the works for us to perform Andrew Livingston’s News from the Oort Cloud a couple more times that month as well. First, a quick rundown of the past two months: Paul Pinto and I had three fun performances of our Patriots opera in Vermont, the Catskills, and Baltimore, and Pete Wise and I had a successful premiere in Boston of our duo Wise & Young, which you can watch and listen to here. I played with World/Inferno in Providence, New Jersey, and at Mercury Lounge in NYC, I improvised with The ALYance and others in an eight-hour event at the Somerville Armory, and I created 25 minutes of new solo material at the New York Mills Arts Retreat in rural Minnesota, which I premiered at a well-reviewed performance there and a Minneapolis show that was recorded live.

Starting this evening, thingNY is proud to present the three-show premiere tour of You Must Read a Lot of Jung, a brand new work written for the ensemble by member Dave Ruder, scored for voice, violin, clarinet, tenor sax, cello, and cymbal. Slow and spacious, Jung works over themes and ideas from previous thingNY pieces written by members of the group. At the New York stop on the tour, thingNY is also excited to present a new duo co-written and performed by members Gelsey Bell and Erin Rogers, SKYLIGHGHT for voice and saxophone. We’ll share bills with some great folks: Anne Rhodes and Adam Matlock in Connecticut, softboarding in NYC, and Erik Ruin’s Ominous Cloud Ensemble in Philly.

Later this month, I look forward to joining World/Inferno on a quick West Coast jaunt to play the Punk Rock Bowling Festival in Las Vegas and a soon-to-be-announced gig in southern California. And further down the line, I’m looking forward to my residency in Graz, Austria in September and October!

Patriots mini-tour, Wise & Young duo premiere, Minnesota residency

The start of 2019 has seen an explosion of new projects, including a new piece with Paul Pinto, a new duo with Laura Dykes, and a new trio with Mitchel Ahern and Vanessa LeFevre. The trend continues this week, as a mini-tour of mine and Paul Pinto’s ever-relevant Patriots opera is followed by the premiere of Wise and Young, a new duo with percussionist Peter Wise. Then I head to rural Minnesota for a 19-day residency developing new solo work at the New York Mills Cultural Center, followed by my first show in Minneapolis. And these aren’t the only shows coming up – read on for more!

First, a recap of my 2019 so far. In early January, Paul Pinto and I spent five days at Camphill Soltane and Community Arts Phoenixville in eastern Pennsylvania working on a new piece where we play motivational speakers. Keep an eye out for future developments, and watch an excerpt on Facebook here. From January 26-February 7, Austin-based bassist Laura Dykes and I had a great tour of the Southwest as Dykes and Young, with duo shows in Dallas, Lubbock, Albuquerque, Flagstaff, Phoenix, Tucson, El Paso, San Antonio, and Austin. At the OME Festival in Phoenix, we also played in the Black House New Music Workshop, where we premiered large ensemble pieces by five composers (on YouTube here). Last week, I had my first performance with an unusual new electroacoustic trio (see photo) called The ALYance, featuring myself, Mitchel Ahern, and Vanessa LeFevre, at XFest in Worcester, MA. I’ve also played two solo sets, performed five shows with The World/Inferno Friendship Society, and recorded part of a score for an experimental film. It’s been busy!

Next up are three performances with Paul Pinto of our Patriots opera, our first shows since our July album release tour. We’ll perform this Saturday in North Bennington, VT at multi-use space The Left Bank, Sunday in Mount Tremper, NY (in the Catskills) at restaurant/bar The Pines, and Tuesday at a secret underground location in Baltimore. Let the 2019 campaign for a stranger America begin!

Then, next Thursday, I’m very pleased to premiere a brand new electroacoustic duo with percussionist and fellow NYC-to-Boston transplant Peter Wise at the Harvard Ed Portal in my own neighborhood. Inspired by jazz, electronic, and classical music, we’ve developed our collaborative creations over two months through a process of improvisation, recording, and revision. Following the concert, we’ll discuss our music and development process with the audience. We’re honored to have received a grant from the Boston Cultural Council to support our work, the same grant I received in November to work with Felix Del Tredici (keep an eye out for more developments there too).

The following Sunday, I’ll play a show in Providence with the ever boisterous World/Inferno Friendship Society – see you there, Providentians! – and then take off the next day for my residency at the New York Mills Cultural Center in Minnesota. I’m thankful to the Center for offering me the opportunity to focus on creating new solo material for violin and live electronics. Save the date in April for my second show with The ALYance at a marathon concert in the Boston area, and in May for thingNY’s premiere of a new piece by Dave Ruder. In June, Dykes and Young will play at the Re:Sound festival in Cleveland, and in the fall, I head off to Graz, Austria for a two-month residency.

New project and solo in Boston, World/Inferno northeast dates, thingNY-Andrew Livingston album release show

Exciting projects with collaborators old and new are on the horizon! This week, I’m working with Montreal-based trombonist Felix Del Tredici on a new duo piece through a grant from the Boston Cultural Council, with a work showing in Boston this Wednesday. On December 9th in Cambridge, I’ll play a solo set on a bill with Leah Asher. Later next month, thingNY will launch a new album by Andrew Livingston at C’mon Everybody in Brooklyn, and World/Inferno will play dates with The Bouncing Souls in Rhode Island, Brooklyn, and Delaware. In January, I’ll develop a new duo piece with Paul Pinto, and tour the Southwest with bassist Laura Dykes. Later in 2019, I’ll head off to residencies in Minnesota and Graz, Austria. My work this week with Felix Del Tredici grew out of our collaboration in Switzerland on NOMOZART, the movement and music project for young audiences that was a big part of my work last year. This time, it’s just the two of us creating a piece together, using our instruments, my Ableton Live setup, a few accessories, and our voices. You can see the results in Boston this Wednesday at 7:30pm – please get in touch if you’d like to come. We were very pleased to receive workshop space from Fort Point Theatre Channel and funding for the project from the Boston Cultural Council. Next, on December 9th, I’m pleased to share the stage with violinist Leah Asher at Outpost 186 in Cambridge. She’ll be performing a set of acoustic improv modeled on themes from her first solo album, Retreat into Afters. I’ll be performing my solo music for violin and Ableton Live, much of which I haven’t performed in Boston before! Would love to see you there…

In the middle of next month, I’ll join the World/Inferno Friendship Society on three dates in the Northeast with the Worriers and headliners The Bouncing Souls. Further ahead, I’m looking forward to creating new work with Paul Pinto at a residency generously provided by Camphill Soltane in eastern Pennsylvania, and to my inaugural tour with Laura Dykes from Austin to Phoenix and back around the Oh My Ears Festival in late January/early February. And later in 2019, I’m very excited for my residencies in New York Mills, MN, where I’ll be working on new solo work for violin and Ableton Live, and in Graz, Austria, where I’ll be continuing work on Switching Tongues, the project that Margarethe Maierhofer-Lischka, Manuel Alcaraz Clemente, and I started there this past March.
